this man has most definitely been one of the ppl i have looked to over the last several years. he has directed literally some of my favorite music videos of all time and he gives me inspiration to achieve the impossible because like him, i come from humble beginnings and a strangely similar background. no, seriously, strangely similar. it’s weird.

if i could spend everyday of my life directing music videos i would be content until my time in this world is over. and drake’s initiative and ambition gives me hope that maybe one day that one music video gig a year will become one every other week.

really excited to be able to read up on his personal thoughts and feelings on the industry from his perspective. it promises to be good.

so this is a film that i worked on last summer. i was the audio engineer and worked alongside a crew, half of which whom i had never served with before. it was a very heavy week and half over which time we filmed this story.

i remember coming in that tuesday morning to Manasseh and having a two hour long meeting during which time we were shown a presentation and heard personal stories of women who have been trafficked on the streets. and not just any streets; the streets of grand rapids. the streets of our city. my city.

it was so real. so close to home. i could hardly handle it. story after story, image after image, this was real and close enough to touch. i have always been an advocate against human trafficking, but this project threw into sharp relief just how close to home this injustice comes to my own backyard.

one of my favorite things the director of the piece said having finished the project was how this story changed his own heart and attitude toward prostitution. he no longer looked at these women as immoral, but rather saw them as exploited and trapped, broken, misused, and tortured. his heart broke for them. it was a feeling we all felt; a deep and sacred pain to want to restore these women.

it’s an impossible cause with just a few, but together human trafficking can be brought to an end.

i’m honored to have been able to help tell this story.

this is absolutely one of the most amazing, innovative, and creative uses of the illusion that an organization has ever come up with.

this is beyond cool; it’s breathtakingly beautiful. what a serious and hard to imagine situation, yet such an amazing outreach to those children hurting.

i want to dedicate my life to helping market and create campaign ads like this one for other social justice oriented groups across the world.

every time i watch this film i am brought back to just how amazing this story is. the characters are so real. the pain and trail so true. and the tension so beautifully displayed cinematically. oh to simply try and tell a story of equal power and with such excellence would be my dream.

but we can’t let that become the driving reason why we do what we do; we do what we do because we believe in telling a good story. whether that means we win approval from the panels “on high” or not. we wake up in the morning and make films because we believe in the stories that we decide to create.

it’s amazing when those stories can win respect and attention, but we must remember; all vanity is fleeting.
